Personal statement

A personal accomplishment of mine that marked childhood to adulthood would most likely be when I got my first job at McDonalds in April 2015. This is a big personal accomplishment because I never would've thought that I'd be getting me my first job at the age of 16.

It all started at the beginning of April when I walked in & saw a sign that stated "apply here at mchawaii.net" that night I did just that, I applied for my very first job. The next morning was like any other morning, but just a little more excited than usual waiting for my call about the job. I got to school at around 7:30, school started at 8:15. It was like any other day too, I went to my first period Mow class, then to my thirst period chemistry class, after that was recess & that's when it happened. I got a phone call at about 11:15 during recess from an unfamiliar number, I answered it & it was them, it was McDonald's calling me letting me know that they'd gotten my application & read it over. I've never been soo nervous in my life, I got an interview scheduled that day at 4:00. Throughout that whole day i couldn't stop thinking about my interview, but the more I thought about it the more nervous I got. When the school day was over I rushed home, more excited than usual I told my family about my interview later that day, they were all so proud of me.

I arrived at McDonalds at 3:15, 15 minutes before my interview dressed in black pants, close toed shoes, & a tshirt. Shortly after I showed up, I saw the general manager Ernest Noh come out, he looked at me & somehow he knew it was me getting interviewed out of all the other kids there. The interview began, i was more nervous than ever, my heart was racing. Soon another manager came out, her name was Doreen, they both began to ask me questions such as "where do you live?", "how far is your house from here?", "do you have transportation?", & etc. the interview ended at around 4:45, I thanked them for their time & was told that I should be getting another call in a few days to see how it went.

A few days turned into what felt to me like weeks. Until about 8 days later I got a phone call during recess telling me that my interview had gone great & that I'd gotten the job. They asked if later that day if it was possible that I could go to the McDonald's in kona commons for a job orientation at 4:00, I said "of course, I'd love to". I was told to wear black pants, non-slip black shoes, & a regular tshirt.

I showed up at the kona commons McDonald  at 3:30, 30 minutes earlier than the orientation was supposed to begin. I walked in, I could see 2 other people that had their orientation today also. Then it was my turn, but before the orientation could begin we had to do a drug test, it was the first time I've ever done one it was nerve wrecking. When the drug testing was over that's when the real orientation began, I walked into a small room called the crew room seated in there was 5 other potential McDonald's employees, I was glad to see that I wasn't the only one going through the nervousness, it was very releaving. The orientation was basically filling out paperwork such as health insurance papers, tax papers & other types of important papers. By the time it was over, I felt like I couldn't write anymore. The orientation ended at about 5:30, which meant that I got paid for my first hour an half of work. That was really exciting. I was told that I should be getting a call from the McDonald's in Kealakekua in a couple days to tell me about my work schedule.

My first day at work, wasn't one of my favorites. It was a total of 4hours sitting in a crew room watching videos about how McDonald's works & all the customer service things. Although I was excited for my first day of work I was also scared, I could hear a lot of movement it's a very fast paced moving job. Over the course of the next 5-6 days I was in training, training was basically being taught how to do simple tasks such as making ice creams, frappes, fries, & other simple items. It was very fun, then I was taught how to take orders, that was the scary part, it was a big screen with a bunch of items. When I got the hang of that, I realized that working there wasn't that hard, once I'd gotten the hang of things. I was happy with my job choice & continue to be happy with it.

I still continue to work at the McDonald's in Kealakekua, I don't regret applying here. I've learned many skills such as customer service & food service. These skills will help me in the future because I plan on going into the culinary Industry.

  1. I'm confused, Sarina...why is your personal statement in your blog? The assignment in Edmodo for this blog post is to choose one of the quotes on the google doc I linked and write about it...unfortunately, this does not fulfill the requirement for this blog post.
